How Zakat is calculated

Zakat is due at 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once that wealth is above the nisab threshold. In practice most people add up cash in hand, bank balances, savings, gold and silver, then subtract any debts that are due immediately.

The commonly used nisab reference points are 7.5 tola of gold (about 87.48 grams) or 52.5 tola of silver (about 612.36 grams). Many scholars recommend using the silver nisab because it is the lower of the two, which allows more people to fulfil the obligation.

This calculator gives you the 2.5% figure for the net amount you enter. It does not decide whether Zakat is due on your assets, and it does not cover the detailed rules for business stock, property held for resale, or agricultural produce. For those questions, please consult a qualified scholar.

Frequently asked questions

What rate is Zakat calculated at?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, which is one fortieth (1/40).

What is nisab?

The minimum amount of wealth that makes Zakat due. It is commonly given as 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver.

Should I use gold or silver nisab?

Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower. Check with a qualified scholar for your own situation.

Does this include my house or car?

No. The personal home you live in and the car you use are normally not zakatable.
